Britain wakes up to Trantec SD7000 digital wireless

Better Sound Ltd, one of the UKs leading pro-audio suppliers, has purchased 16 channels of Trantec’s flagship SD7000 digital wireless system. For over three decades Better Sound has provided major broadcasters with the latest in wireless technology, and their long-standing customer GMTV has now upgraded to the cutting-edge SD7000 for all presenters and their guests.

GMTV took over the breakfast slot from its predecessor TVam back in the early 1990s and now broadcasts to 5 million viewers every morning. Better Sound has supplied GMTV from the beginning and constantly ensures that the broadcaster has access to equipment that is at the forefront of today’s broadcast technology.

Trantec’s SD7000 is a professional digital wireless microphone system and trials have successfully demonstrated that double the number of user channels can be used compared to analogue systems. Other features include 24-bit audio resolution, fast DSP – reducing latency to extremely low levels, and network monitoring for full control of up to 60 channels.

Paul Nooney, Head of Sound at GMTV, commented "I like the system very much. They sound more like cabled mics rather than radiomics. At first we were concerned about possible sound delay when used against hard wired lapel mics but there is no discernible difference. We are very pleased with them".

Senior Manager at Better Sound, Brian Clarke added, “With the current lack of certainty surrounding the radio spectrum sell-off, you have to think carefully before investing in radio microphone channels. Despite holding in excess of 600 channels, we auditioned the SD7000 and realized we had to have it. The system has a powerful set of features and combines solid performance capabilities with effective flexibility. It’s good to see metal casings on both transmitters and receivers to withstand the rigours of daily use, and the 6 hour 2 x AA battery life is yet another bonus as they easily outlast such a lengthy show. We are delighted with the relationship we have built with GMTV over many years, and we are justly proud that in this highly competitive market we can sit round the table with their production team and demonstrate new products as they become available.”

As a founder member of BEIRG, Clarke adds, “It is a shame that OfCom’s major drive is to sell off access to the radio spectrum – primarily for the benefit of mobile broadband. They have a moral responsibility to save spectrum for those who need it, and what compounds the problem is that we are having to wait for so long before a final decision is made. Trantec have done their homework on this system and it does alleviate certain spectrum issues that will no doubt arise in the future.”

Trantec’s Head of Sales and Marketing, Mark Parkhouse says, “Our aim is to provide a system that engenders comfort, quality, and a long trouble-free working life. The SD7000 has to prove itself daily to millions of viewers and we are delighted that GMTVs production team have selected Trantec.”
